I've read at least snippets of all of Zachary's work (including all of Reading Poker Tells) and I can't recommend him highly enough. Obviously, his knowledge base is massive and universally correct. However, that's not the real value in his work. The real value comes from his ability to clearly, concisely, and simply explain the information. It would be very easy for someone to hide behind significant amounts of subjective terminology and incidentally convolute the information all in an effort to sound flowery and "prove that he knows more than you". Mr. Elwood doesn't do that, though. The way in which he presents the information is extremely approachable and there are always very clear explanations and expectations of how reliably we can apply the information from the book to situations at the table. Basically, if you want something easy to understand that will immediately increase your win rate, then by this damn book!
I shouldn't be writing this review, but I can't not help support this game changing work. The author has spent a ton of time and energy to put together a great book that will help you and your game in a different way than just taking new lines and figuring pot odds.If you are a serious player that is looking for ways to expand your win rate and hourly earn, and are willing to put in the time to study and learn the things in this book, this book will pay for itself several times over. If nothing else, it will make you realize the info that you are giving away, and help you protect yourself at the table.
What Zachary Elwood has done with this book is create an architectural framework for reading poker tells. It's really quite remarkable what he's done by placing tells into their respective situational importance. As an Enterprise Architect, I help companies study and develop architectural frameworks that allow their business to run more smoothly and efficiently. He has the mindset of an Enterprise Architect but has the ability to explain his framework to the average poker player. This is the single factor that sets this book apart (and better than) any other book on tells. If you only read one book on tells, this is the one to get. Even if you are intellectually lazy and don't want to learn to read tells, this book will teach you how to avoid giving off your own tells. If you think tells are unimportant, you're wrong. Read this book and win more money at poker. Easy to read and very informative.
I've been playing about 4 years and am pretty good at reading people. A lot of the tells in the book I knew but it helps to reemphasize them so you know to look for these things. I play a lot of live poker and if youre knew to live poker this is a must. Its good even if you're not new. I've read most of the tells books out there including the one written by Navarro and Helmuth (of course Caros as well) and those are a joke compared to this book. This book gives REAL LIFE tells that I see all the time in low stakes. Those other books mention stuff like someone leaning in more or hands closer inwards equals strength which are rediculous; I never see that in a live game. Or if someone starts shaking their leg. How often to you see that? Um never. This book talks abotu how quick someone acts or stares at you etc. THESE are things that are real tells you see every day. Very Good Book.
To be honest this was the first book on poker tells I have ever read and I thought it was a good book. However, I believe that to get a sense of who we were reading about and from what perspective this book came from, the "About Me" section should have been one of the first sections we should have read in this book. The Author lists it near the very end of the book. Although I haven't read many other books on tells, this book is probably much easier to read based on how the author splits this book up in 3 sections: Waiting-for-Action tells, During-Action tells, and Post-Bet Tells; the author lists the tells a player tends to show when he is either weak or strong for each section. It is well written and well organized. He also teaches that it is very important to correlate between the tell and the player. Trust me. It is a very good book. One you need if you have a poker book collection. (Very good for Limit Player as well as No limit players).
This book is great whether you are new to Poker Tells (Doug Polk) or an experienced watcher of hands, body language, faces, etc. I've read it 2 or 3 times and will read it several more times.
I have several psychology books relating to poker tells in different degrees (including Caro's). They're all useful, but it's still up to you to apply in different situations. You still have to make the right applications here too, BUT this book is more focused on how to use tells in specific ways while playing. Well articulated and organized. Plus, Elwood gets into even more detail online using videos and real world situations. I've not purchased any poker books for quite awhile (I have over 30), but I'm glad I got this one. No, it's not rocket science, but for me a useful tool.
